In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, it is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting packed houses and the biggest names in jazz and popular music and Ronnie Scott’s welcoming, stylish setting is also home to London’s coolest late night hang.

Each night Monday to Saturday, after the main act, Ronnie Scott’s presents the Late Late Show, where some of the UK’s finest jazz talents take to the stage for a late night blowing session.

PHIL ROBSON

Winner of ‘Best Jazz Musician Of The Year’ in the 2009 -10 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Nominated for a 2013 Jazz FM award for ‘best instrumentalist of the year’.

Phil Robson’s music, on a first hearing, always gives me that feeling I haven’t yet heard right the way through it to the other side. Yes, there are moments of beauty, external allure, yes there is variety. But there is also a depth which brings one back wanting to revisit, to hear more and more….. unmissable.” londonjazz.blogspot.com

Phil Robson is internationally regarded as a highly versatile and creative player who appears in all kinds of diverse settings, as well as being a renowned bandleader & composer. It is hard to categorise his style of playing & writing, as so many influences & experiences have gone into the melting pot.
Earlier, prevailing influences such as Hendrix & Miles, Parker, Kessell etc blend with many elements from the wider jazz world such as Ornette Coleman, Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner etc as well as with dimensions from African & Brazilian music, 20th century composers & contemporary musicians of all kinds as well as maintaining a respect for the entire jazz tradition. He has recorded many solo & co-led CDs for the ground breaking indie label ‘Babel’ & more recently for ‘Whirlwind recordings Ltd’.

In purely guitaristic terms, a large cross section (Wes, Martino, Hall, Eubanks, Frisell, Metheny, Scofield etc, etc) are apparent in the mix, but the end result has created an individual way of playing that prompted US sax legend David Liebman to say “Phil is a wonderful guitarist and composer, definitely a unique player. We had a ball and hopefully I will be able to play with Phil again.

As a band leader Robson has fronted many innovative projects including:
‘The Immeasurable Code Quintet’ with Mark Turner/Julian Arguelles – sax, Gareth Lockrane – flute, Michael Janisch – bass & Ernesto simpson – drums.
‘Six strings & the beat’ – with Peter Herbert – Bass, Gene Calderazzo – drums, Mandy Drummond – violin, Jennymay Logan – violin, Naomi Fairhurst – viola, Kate Shortt – cello.
Phil Robson Trio – with NY drum legend Billy Hart & James Genus, bass.
Phil Robson quartet featuring US sax legend David Liebman & Jeff Williams.
Phil Robson Octet with Jason Yarde, Julian siegel, Christine Tobin, Gene Calderazzo, Thebe Lipere, Karren Street,.
His latest solo project is an organ trio with the incredible Ross Stanley & Gene Calderazzo.

Co leads the cult band ‘Partisans’ with Julian Siegel featuring Gene Calderazzo – drums & Thad Kelly – bass which has been a major influence on the European contemporary scene & beyond.

Long term band member & sometimes collaborator with Christine Tobin, whose ground breaking approach to singing & songwriting is highly acclaimed.

Robson has been commissioned several times to write music & put projects together by both Derby Jazz & Birmingham jazz as well as writing music for live theater shows.

Phil is also currently a professor of music at Trinity College Of Music, The Royal Academy Of Music & The Guildhall School Of Music & Drama.
