Wednesday 10th September - Saturday 13th September
The hugely popular show is back at Ronnies will feature Dave Brubeck’s legendary music and original compositions by his sons and featuring one of the UK’s most highly regarded saxophonists, Dave O’Higgins
The quartet “Brubecks Play Brubeck” is returning to Ronnie Scott’s, having completed sold out residencies here for the past 4 years.
This visit to England, planned some time ago, has become more poignant since Dave Brubeck’s passing 2 years ago, one day before his 92nd birthday. In the 70’s and 80’s, the three Brubeck brothers (Darius, Chris, and Dan) recorded and toured worldwide with their father Dave as “Two Generations of Brubeck” and “The New Brubeck Quartet”.
“Brubecks Play Brubeck” captures the spirit and rhythms of the famous Dave Brubeck Quartet but, as John Fordham wrote in the Guardian, “sheltering under the Brubeck umbrella is by no means all the maestro’s offspring do”. In addition to well-known standards and Brubeck hits, the group also plays compositions by the brothers.
Darius, the eldest Brubeck son is a jazz pianist, educator and band-leader and has his own Quartet, which regularly plays at festivals and clubs around the UK and abroad. Chris’ symphonic works are performed by leading orchestras and, as a bass and trombone player, also excels in the jazz, rock and folk genres. Dan is a renowned, Grammy-nominated percussionist, acclaimed for his exciting drum solos and has been featured with musicians as diverse as Gerry Mulligan and The Band. Dave O’Higgins, who has recorded a dozen albums with his own band, adds imaginative and polished improvisations to the family mix.
