Avishai Cohen
Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen is renowned as a composer as much as he is for his skill on his instrument. One of the first Israel-born jazz players to make a name for themselves in the US, he moved to New York permanently in 1992 to study with Andy Gonzalez and played in bands with Abel Rodriguez and Danilo Perez. He came to international prominence after being noticed by Chick Corea while playing in New York, becoming a founding member of the pianist’s ‘Origin’ sextet and was a member of the Chick Corea New Trio until 2003. He has also played alongside Bobby McFerrin, Roy Hargrove and Herbie Hancock among others. Cohen’s latest release, Gently Disturbed, is the first studio album with his new trio featuring Mark Guiliana on drums and the 21 year old Shai Maestro on piano, and the group will be performing music from this CD for their three night Ronnie’s run.
