In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, it is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting packed houses and the biggest names in jazz and popular music and Ronnie Scott’s welcoming, stylish setting is also home to London’s coolest late night hang.

Each night Monday to Saturday, after the main act, Ronnie Scott’s presents the Late Late Show, where some of the UK’s finest jazz talents take to the stage for a late night blowing session.

MIKE COADY

Born in Waterford, Ireland, Michael began playing bass with local R 'n' B and Rock bands in his early teens. Some years later he started private studies with jazz bassist and composer Ronan Guilfoyle. This prompted him to move to Dublin where he soon began playing with great Irish jazz musicians such as Richie and Michael Buckley, Mike Neilson and Noel Kelehan.

In 1997 Michael joined the quartet of legendary guitarist Louis Stewart with whom he has played with regularly ever since. During this time Michael also had the opportunity to work with many great visiting artists like Ronnie Cuber, Warren Vasche, Scot Hamilton, Spike Robinson, Mark Murphy, Alan Broadbent and others. He also joined a number of project bands including T.I.M.E. (The Improvised Music Ensemble), an Arts Council sponsored nonnete performing commissioned music by Irish composers.

Throughout this period Michael continued his studies, graduating with a L.G.S.M diploma from Newpark Music School, Blackrock, Co. Dublin in 1998 as well as attending workshops in Canada and the Netherlands and private studies with bassists Furio De Castri and Michael Moore. In 2001 he took advantage of a scholarship to attend Berklee School of Music, Boston, USA.

On returning from the States Michael again settled in Dublin where he stayed for the next two years, performing and teaching. During this time he began working internationally throughout Europe. After some time playing with British alto saxophonist Peter King Michael decided to move to London . It was here that he became involved with a group of young creative musicians out of which the Loop Collective (a London based musicians collective promoting original improvised music) was formed and included such musicians as Jim Hart, Jasper Hoiby and Ivo Neame.

Michael returned to Dublin in 2009 in order to complete a masters in music at Dublin Institute of Technology and graduated with 1st class honors in October 2010. He now spends his time working between Dublin and London and further afield performing, teaching and writing.

Michael has also played with many great international jazz artists such as Edward Simon, Mike LeDonne, Bob Shepard, Eric Alexander, Peter Bernstein and Jason Rebello. His debut album, due for release in July 2012, features one of the great modern jazz saxophonists, David Binney. This is also a chance to hear some of his original compositions.

Michael has received a number of awards including funding under the Music Network/Arts Council of Ireland Capital Scheme towards the purchase of a fine quality bass.
