posted Monday 7th March
Blue Note Records star Robert Glasper brings his funk and hip-hop edged project the “Robert Glasper Experiment” to Ronnie Scott's for four nights from May 23rd - May 26th 2011 and is working on a new album.
For those of you who are not familiar, Robert performs with two groups: The Robert Glasper Trio plays traditional jazz and the “RBE” or Robert Glasper Experiment is a fusion of Jazz, R&B and Hip-Hop with a lead vocalist or an MC.
The brilliant pianist who was born and raised on R&B and hip-hop often performs with a few of his favourite artists including Mos Def, Talib Kwali, the Roots and Q-Tip (Tribe Called Quest), amongst others.
Over the weekend, Robert performed at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in new York with Stokley (Lead singer of Mint Condition), Lupe Fiasco (Kick/Push) and Lalah Hathaway (the late Donny Hathaway’s daughter) – basically to introduce his forthcoming album scheduled for release later this year.
On Saturday night, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco and Mr. Kanye West joined Robert on stage!!!
Needless to say, the audience went wild and the US blogs have been buzzing with Kanye’s surprise guest appearance at the Blue Note. Mos Def is a huge fan of Robert Glasper and ALWAYS shows up when Robert is playing in New York city.
We are looking at an April/May recording window (so we can expect to hear lots of new tunes at Ronnie Scott's this May and an Autumn release (TBA) for the new album. Robert is leaving for Jakarta on Wednesday for a few show dates as well as touring Europe in March, so when he is back in the states the recording process will begin.

Pianist Robert Glasper was the talk of the blogosphere at the weekend following his Blue Note jazz club residency in New York. Glasper who was performing with his hip hop angled outfit the Experiment was set to perform with rapper Lupe Fiasco, but was joined for one of the shows by Kanye West and Mos Def.
No stranger to star rappers and neo-soul stars (he has also been working with singer Maxwell and appears on his next album) Glasper will return to the UK where he has a growing fanbase for four nights at Ronnie Scott’s from 23-26 May.
Blue Note records has also confirmed that Glasper will go into the studio shortly to record the follow-up to his acclaimed album Double-Booked in April/May. One of the hits of last year’s London Jazz Festival where he was joined for an encore by trumpeter Terence Blanchard, Glasper is one of the new generation of jazz artists capable of bringing on new audiences and reaching out to the hip hop generation keen to dip their toes into some jazz as well.
