South Africa provides the theme for tonight’s exclusive performance. For the first time ever, South African trumpeter Claude Deppa performs opposite Darius Brubeck's highly rated Quartet.
At the forefront of the UK’s African jazz music scene is South African born trumpeter and composer Claude Deppa. Resident in the UK for over 30 years, Deppa can turn his hand to Afro-jazz, soul, funk, Afro-Cuban and even chamber music as well as many sub-genres, and has performed with many greats including Miriam Makeba, Manu Dibango and Tony Allen.
Pianist Darius Brubeck, eldest son of jazz-legend Dave Brubeck, was born in San Francisco yet spent most of the 70’s touring the world with his father and brothers as a member of Two Generations of Brubeck and The New Brubeck Quartet until forming his own fusion band, Gathering Forces. His academic career began in 1983 when he introduced the first formal Jazz Studies degree in Africa at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa where he remained until 2006. During this time a 1990’s version of Gathering Forces recorded an album in Durban, and he established an international reputation touring with South African musicians.
The Darius Brubeck Quartet are well known for their renditions of Tshona (Pat Matshikiza), Tsakwe (Abdullah Ibrahim) and Darius’ own Tugela Rail. The band will also perform Mamazala in a tribute to its composer, Zim Ngqawana, who died suddenly last month.
Brubeck will play an early set at 8 pm of South African jazz classics, followed by Claude Deppa and his Sextet 9.30pm special guests and Jonathan Elmer (trombone). This really is a top drawer double bill.
