Pat Crumly 1942-2008
Monday 29th SeptemberPat died this weekend after heart failure, whilst in Italy. Pat was a close personal friend of Ronnie Scott. He was also the man who Ronnie used to put in when he (Ronnie) was ill. He was a most respected sax player and a much loved figure on the British Jazz scene.
Alongside pianist John Critchinson, he was a founder member of the "Ronnie Scott Legacy Band" which kept Ronnie's music alive after he had died. As a performer Pat performed with many great musicians including John Dankworth, Jack Jones, and Jimmy Witherspoon. He was a spiritual musician who inspired many people, young and old, to achieve their full potential as musicians. Pat was a very positive man. I often used to bump into him in the early evening, whilst one of us was en route to a gig - we'd always manage to sneak a quick half in the "Dog" and catch up. He would never talk about himself, but would always have a cheery story to tell - usually about Ronnie Scott.
This year has seen the passing of so many great musicians and friends of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Humphrey Lytlleton, Allan Ganley, Johnny Griffin, Esbjorn Swensson, Bheki Mseleku to name but a few. Where ever they all are now- it would certainly be an interesting band!
