Information on Steve Nelson Quartet + NEJQ

The vibraphone is one of jazz's newer instruments but has nonetheless come a long way in a short time, with several noted musicians achieving a great deal of success on it. One such player is Steve Nelson. Beginning his career in the early Seventies, he followed in the footsteps of vibes legend Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, his playing led him to join forces with guitarist Grant Green before later performing with James Spaulding, Kenny Barron, David Newman, Mulgrew Miller and eventually in bass virtuoso Dave Holland's amazing quintet, with whom he has recorded several albums. Other stints include his innovative work with Jackie McLean and Johnny Griffin amongst others, and he has released six albums as a leader of his own group, his latest being 2007's Sound-Effect. Nelson is possessed of a highly original and technically brilliant voice on his instrument of choice, and these Ronnie Scott's dates will see him in fine form within his Quartet, consisting of pianist Danny Keith Grissett, bassist Benjamin Williams and drummer Thaddeus Dixon.

Excellent support on these nights comes from The Northern European Jazz Quartet, with Norwegian players Frode Nymo (alto sax) and Hakon Mjaset Johansen (drums) joining Swedish bass player Torbjorn Zetterberg and English tenor star Dave O'Higgins.
