Information on Ronnie Cuber
The baritone sax can sometimes be seen as somewhat unwieldy, especially when held up against its less weighty counterparts. Not so in the hands of Ronnie Cuber, whose nimble lyricism easily stretches from rich throaty growls in the lower register ranges to soaring, searing runs at the high end.
As well as performing as a much-coveted sideman alongside artists as diverse as B.B. King, Lionel Hampton, Frank Zappa, George Benson, Lee Konitz and 'Dr' Lonnie Smith, he has released over a dozen albums as a leader, starting with 1976's Cuber Libre!
A celebrated soloist, bandleader, composer and arranger, Cuber's exuberant and striking style will be complimented on these dates by featured soloist Kenny Drew Jr. on piano, whose hard-swinging, bluesy style echoes his father as well as Oscar Peterson, though Kenny - who started in funk bands - is more eclectic than either of them...
