Roy Haynes

30th October – 1st November: Roy Haynes, £20/£26/£36
Fans of jazz’s rhythm men have been well served by Ronnie’s of late, with the great Louis Hayes’ appearances at the club in August going down a well-deserved storm. Following on from Hayes in October is the spectacular Roy Haynes, who has backed some of the most influential players in the history of the music; Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Gary Burton, Miles Davis, Pat Metheney, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Sarah Vaughan and Stan Getz have all had their tunes driven by Haynes’ pulsing beat, and he was a regular player with Charlie Parker and Lester Young in the 1940s and ‘50s. The man’s sixty year recording and performing career has informed him with a truly awesome sense of timing, swing and rhythm and he is rightly held in great regard as one of the most innovative drummers around. Despite his advancing years, his playing never feels anything but fresh and new, constantly searching for new ideas and modes of expression.
Opening for Haynes is celebrated UK bassist Mike Janisch with his TransAtlantic Collective, the group he founded in 2005 with award winning New York saxophonist Patrick Cornelius. Janisch has earned rave reviews for his unshakable sense of swing, and continues to impress both in the UK and abroad.

Michael Janisch and the TransAtlantic Collective:
CD Release Residency for Debut Album: “Traveling Song”
Out now on Woodville Records
Michael Janisch, an Americanborn
freelance bassist now resident in
London, has in recent years become a new global voice on the electric and
acoustic basses. A relentless musician, he has been described as a
“muscular, fluent player with an irresistible pulse and has virtuosic soloing
technique” (JazzWise), and has become a first call musician in the UK,
Europe and in his native United States. He has shared the stage with the
likes of US heavyweights Joe Lovano, Clark Terry, Mark Turner, Shirley
Horn, and Roy Hargrove, and UK greats Jason Rebello, Tim Garland, Tommy
Smith, Jean Toussaint, Gary Husband, and Alex Garnett.
Tonight he presents his TransAtlantic Collective, for their second residency
at the club, which he has been leading around the world for 4 years along
with awardwinning
NYC Altoist Patrick Cornelius. They will be joined by
one of New York’s hottest new drumming sensations, Paul Wiltgen (LUX),
dazzling Estonian Pianist Kristjan Randalu, and virtuosic UK trumpet ace
Quentin Collins. These three nights will be the official European CD Release
Event for their debut album Traveling Song, out now on Alan Barne’s
Woodville Records. Also, this residency is kicking off their more than 30
date UK tour, which has generously been funded by the Arts Council
England. From there, they go on to two weeks in Europe. The TransAtlantic
Collective will be presenting music that has been described as dynamic,
highenergy,
contemporary jazz. This will be a special AngloAmerican
Collaboration of the highest order not to be missed.
“Michael Janisch seizes his instrument with a blend of speed and
energy as if he wants to be melody, harmony and rhythm all at
once…” The Telegraph
“The TransAtlantic Collective has really established itself as an
exciting working unit, forging genuine connections between London,
Europe, and NYC….highly-charged contemporary jazz fuelled by their
innate virtuosity, but never hindered by it.”
