BOOKER T JONES

It can be argued that it was Booker T. Jones who set the cast for modern soul music and is largely responsible for its rise and enduring popularity.  On classic Stax hits like “Green Onions,” “Hang ‘Em High,” “Time Is Tight,” and “Melting Pot” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient pushed the music’s boundaries, refined it to its essence and then injected it into the nation’s bloodstream.

Ranked in the 100 greatest songs of all time, the number one, million-selling smash Green Onions, the 12-bar blues with a rippling Hammond Organ line was recorded by Booker T & The MG’s for Stax. Booker T went on to become one of the architects of the unique Memphis soul sound and over the next decade, Booker T & the MG’s played on hundreds of recordings by artists such as Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and many others, alongside many other titles under their own name. 1971’s Melting Pot was the last Booker T & the MGs album, although as a producer, songwriter, arranger, and instrumentalist, Jones has gone on to work with a remarkable variety of artists, from Willie Nelson to John Lee Hooker, from Soul Asylum to the Roots, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Eric Clapton.

RAY GELATO GIANTS

Ray_centre_foldcomp.jpg

Ray Gelato is probably the UK’s foremost exponent of swinging good-time jazz, and if he’s good enough to perform privately for Paul McCartney and the Queen, he’s good enough for Ronnie Scott’s! Following in the footsteps of Louis Prima, Louis Armstrong and Cole Porter, Gelato has been getting audiences jumpin’ and jivin’ since he picked up the saxophone in the late ‘70s. He has recorded several albums as both a leader and sideman, but it is in his live performances where his energy really comes to the fore. Gelato is a familiar face at Ronnie Scott’s and he makes a welcome return to the club, his driving tenor and effervescent vocals backed up by his stunning band, the Giants,
