In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, it is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting packed houses and the biggest names in jazz and popular music and Ronnie Scott’s welcoming, stylish setting is also home to London’s coolest late night hang.

Each night Monday to Saturday, after the main act, Ronnie Scott’s presents the Late Late Show, where some of the UK’s finest jazz talents take to the stage for a late night blowing session.

MATT HOME

Born in Huddersfield,West Yorkshire,February 17th 1973, Matt started with the trumpet when he was six but switched to drums at 8, taking drum lessons at school. Aged 18, Matt moved to Leeds to begin a three year course in Jazz and popular music at CLCM graduating in 1994  and soon started working around Leeds and the north of England with local musicians and visiting Jazz musicians from London and the US and Europe.. His early jazz influences came from  Grady Tate, Philly Joe Jones and Art Blakey

In 1999, Matt moved  to London and soon began playing with many of  the great musicians in London, the UK and Europe and has since played with many US artists including Barry Harris,John Bunch, Hod O’ Brien, Herb Geller, Scott Hamilton, Howard Alden, Ken Peplowski, Bob Wilber ,Joe Cohn, Jim Snidero, Eric Alexander  and Gary Smulyan, with whom he completed two UK tours

He has also played in Jazz festivals throughout Europe and South America with Ray Gelato.2007-2010,and recorded with a great many artists including Stacey Kent,Ray Gelato, Karen Sharp, Matt Wates, Alex Garnett, Dave Cliff, Nigel Price, Gareth Lockrane and Allison Neale. Current projects include the  Brandon Allen quartet with whom he appears regualrly at Ronnie Scott’s club, The Jay Phelps Big Band and the Nigel Price Organ Trio with whom he has had a ten year collaboration.

Matt’s  drumming influences are many but would include; Jo Jones, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Roy Haynes, Philly Joe Jones, Albert “tootie” Heath, Billy Higgins, Mel Lewis, Jimmy Cobb to name a few. Of today’s modern drummers he likes Joe Farnsworth, Lewis Nash, Kenny Washington, Willie Jones iii, Rodney Green, Gregory Hutchinson and Bill Stewart.

Matt currently plays regularly with Nigel Price Organ Trio, Matt Wates sextet and the Gareth Lockrane Septet, all of which feature a line -up of young gifted players and original compositions.He also appears regularly at Ronnie Scott’s as part of the house band and at the now much talked about Late Late Show from 11pm weekdays.

The Nigel Price Organ Trio recently won best jazz ensemble in the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.Gareth Lockrane’s septet album “No Messin” (on which he played) also won best jazz album in the same competition.
