Neil Cowley Trio - In the Round

Neil Cowley Trio - In the Round Monday 31st May - Tuesday 1st June

Neil Cowley Trio - In the Round

Neil Cowley – Piano, Richard Sadler – Bass, Evan Jenkins – drums

For 2 very special nights, The Neil Cowley Trio will be performing in the centre of the Ronnie Scott’s Club Room, with the audience all around them (including seated on the usual stage area). As such, customer's seating may vary to take account of this. Your seating will still be within the category that you have booked (priority, standard or restricted).

This is a first for Ronnie’s (and we believe any Jazz Club!) and hope that it adds to the intimacy of the show.

Pianist Neil Cowley and his band, bassist Richard Sadler and drummer Evan Jenkins, have carved out a reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting live bands. Cowley’s music, a powerful examination of the sonic possibilities of the acoustic piano trio draws equally on classical,  trance, rock and jazz, and led Mojo to hail the bands 2008’s Loud louder Stop as a “Modern Classic”, and list it in their ’50 Best Albums’ of that year.

Cowley’s inventiveness, wit and brash dynamism is again in full force.  Described as music for the ‘heart and feet’, they perform tracks from Radio Silence, their new and most eloquent statement yet.  Moving effortlessly between moments of heart-stopping beauty, rip-roaring rock riffs and Chaplinesque ditties, we’re reminded that for all his many influences, Cowley’s music is as quintessentially British as ‘Test Match Special’, warm beer or a bacon sarnie.

MORE INFO:

In just a few short years, the Neil Cowley Trio  have carved out a reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting live bands. The spring tour supports Radio Silence, their new recording released  on the Naim Label on 19th April 2010 - their most complete and eloquent statement yet.

Their debut, Displaced, was released in June 2006, an outstanding album of original recordings that established Cowley as a dazzling pianist and stunning composer.   Through his examination of the possibilities of the acoustic piano trio, Cowley created a unique trademark sound that delivered powerful music of massive dynamic range and contrasts – where ferociously forceful, hook laden melodies sit side by side with reflective, tender pieces capable of heart shattering tenderness.  The album was released to huge critical acclaim, and won the 2007 BBC Jazz Award for Best Album.

Their follow-up, Loud... Louder…Stop, released in March 2008, solidified their sound, yet stretched the envelope further.  It placed Cowley and his trio at the forefront of the British ‘Post-Jazz’ movement, and earned them critical acclaim from across the musical spectrum.  Mojo hailed the recording as a “Modern Classic”, and listed it in their ’50 Best Albums’ of that year.  Noted for blurring the boundaries between jazz and other genres, and, dubbed ‘Jazz for Radiohead fans’, they found themselves with a diverse touring schedule that would take them from Glastonbury and the iTunes Festival to the infamous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club.   A TV appearance on Later with Jools; a Mojo cover- mounted CD (a celebratory reworking of the Beatle’s Revolution); a Guinness commercial and Cowley’s contribution to Adele’s platinum-selling 19, (in particular his now legendary, poignantly expressive intro to Hometown Glory) has seen them inching further toward crossover status.

Radio Silence is  the Neil Cowley Trio’s third album and represents the sound of a band fully comfortable in their unique sonic skin.  It is the record that Cowley has been working towards, seizing the magical empathy of his unit, who, with thousands of hours under their belt have learnt to breathe and listen as one.

Live, Cowley shows instinctive flair and ingenuity as an entertainer.  At the heart of their captivating performances is Cowley’s marvellously English wit, and remarkable rapport with his audience.  Described by Cowley as music for the ‘heart and feet’, the Neil Cowley show moves   effortlessly between moments of poetic grace, rip-roaring riffs and Chaplinesque ditties that reminds us that for all his many influences, Cowley’s music is as British as ‘Test Match Special’, warm beer or a bacon sarnie.
