Biography JOHN TURVILLE
The John Turville trio are recognized as one of the leading young contemporary jazz ensembles in the UK. Winner of ‘best instrumentalist’ in the London jazz awards 2010 and the coveted ‘Promoter’s Choice’ award, John has performed with the trio at many venues throughout the UK including the Manchester, Scarborough and London jazz festivals in 2009 and toured Germany, Spain and Italy with Gilad Atzmon, Tim Garland and Koby Israelite among many others. His first album was released to great critical acclaim last year, accompanied by an extensive national tour. With influences ranging from tango to south Indian and classical music as well as contemporary jazz, the trio has a fresh and approachable sound that is at once contemporary, rhythmically exciting and deeply lyrical.
"I was struck by the musicality of the playing, the sensitivity and empathy in the ensemble and the lyricism and development… There isn't a moment when anything is overplayed [and] they play with a maturity well beyond their years" (Tim Whitehead)
“John Turville is a young conservatoire-trained British pianist with very broadly-based resources […] his adventurousness with harmony and the always lyrical yet narratively swerving designs of his improvisations often recall UK piano giant John Taylor’s playing…” (The Guardian)
