Sunday 10th March

JAZZ VERSE JUKEBOX

Doors 6.30pm show from 8pm:  Entry £7

Featuring:  Aja Monet  *  Dean Atta  *  Anthony Anaxagorou *  Mark Gwynne Jones * plus music from Zara McFarlane

Since its inception four years ago, Jazz Verse Jukebox at Ronnie’s Bar has garnered a loyal following and a growing reputation as the UK’s premier gathering of spoken word poets & singers continuing the age-old tradition of combining jazz and performance poetry.    The brainchild of broadcaster & vocalist Jumoké Fashola, her monthly guest list attracts a who’s who in the genre.  Having welcomed the likes of Lemn Sissay, Soweto Kinch, David Grant, Anthony Joseph, and Colin Salmon amongst others, the eccentric British beat poet - Michael Horovits (the one-time companion of Ginsberg and Kerouac) once described it as "the perfect jazz poetry party"  Alongside an ever changing list of top notch guests, each month Jumoke presents a unique ‘jukebox’ open mic session allowing the audience to showcase their skills.

Tonight Jazz Verse Jukebox digs deep into ‘the word’, both poetic & sung.

Special guests include one of the most accomplished and respected poets within the community, US born, Paris based Aja Monet.   Often received by both poetry and Hip Hop crowds, she has performed for Barack Obama,

And was the youngest individual to ever win the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café grand slam champion title, ranking top 20 in the National Poetry Slam and 5th in the nation as part of the Nuyorican slam team within the same year.   Also appearing tonight is Multi award-winning poet Dean Atta, one of the leading lights in London's poetry scene. His powerful reflections on race, identity and sexuality have won him recognition from BBC Radio, Channel 4 and the Tate Britain

An engaging and energetic performer, Mark Gwynne Jones is well known for surreal, mind-altering poetry with an almost music hall edge. Mixing humour and poignancy with great skill he keenly observes the alien qualities inherent but unnoticed in the world around us. It's contagious, gritty and sometimes startlingly sensitive.

Finally music is provided by 2012 Mobo Nominee, jazz chanteuse Zara McFarlane, who herself wooed a sold out club in the main venue in January.  A powerful yet delicate singer her current release, Until Tomorrow is a mix of standards and sublime originals that asserted herself as a thoughtful lyricist.
