Doors open 6pm
Kevin Haynes Grupo Elegua 7pm
Kokoroko 8.15pm

Late Late show 11pm onwards

Join us for a very special evening of Afrobeat, spiritual and contemporary jazz from established master Kevin Haynes and his Grupo Elegua - plus rising stars Kokoroko, fresh from their contribution to Brownswood recordings "We out Here" project which features some of the hottest emerging artists in UK jazz.

KOKOROKO are a young, London based Afrobeat 8-Piece band led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey. We play music we love, we grew up with and our parents got funky to. Inspired by Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor, Tony Allen and the great sounds that come out of West Africa, we put on a performance to honour the master that taught us.

Most of us are London Jazz school kids who met playing in London. We noticed a void in people like us playing Afrobeat and KOKOROKO – with proper London fire was born.

Trumpet – Sheila Maurice-Grey (Band Leader)
Alto Saxophone – Cassie Kinoshi
Trombone – Richie Seivwright
Guitar – Oscar Jerome
Keyboards – Yohan Kebede
Bass – Mutale Chashi
Percussion – Onome Ighmare
+ some serious friends!

Press quotes:

“As soon as Kokoroko hit the stage, the 900-strong audience was flawed by the band’s musical prowess and stage presence. The band’s beautiful soulful and
spiritual compositions both healed the soul and got bodies moving! Without doubt they are ones to watch in 2018” Nick Lewis, Ronnie Scott’s

The V&A was delighted that Kokoroko played a part in
REVEAL festival, a week-long series of art and design commissions, fashion shows, and performances to
celebrate our new Exhibition Road Quarter opening; the V&
A’s largest architectural intervention in over 100 years.” V&A Museum

Kevin Haynes Grupo Elegua

The music of Alto saxophonist and percussionist, Kevin Haynes, is a fusion of contemporary Jazz, with influences drawing from Afro Cuban and Native Nigerian Yoruba folkloric Bata drumming styles, along side Mandiga folk and praise songs with a hard bop modal concept and flowing Kora lines, creating a unique sound in African Jazz based music.

Kevin has three Albums out under Kevin Haynes Grupo Elegua. Tomorrows path, Ori Ire, Ajo se po (Unity) Haynes has been performing all forms jazz and African Caribbean music for 19 years Ajo se po (‘Unity) is the third album by Kevin Haynes and his Grupo Eleguá, following Tomorrow’s path (1997) and Ori ire (2002). One sense of the title Unity’ is the way Haynes brings together strands of different musical traditions from Africa and the New World
