Line-up: TOMASZ BURA piano/synthesizers; ROUHANGEZE vocals; KEVIN GLASGOW electric bass; LAURIE LOWE drums
CHRIS PHILLIPS: "My look ahead is a nod to Polish keyboard player Tomasz Bura and his band The Scientists. This is hard hitting fusion á la Chick Corea or Ursula Dudziak, with vocal improv from the enchanting Rouhangeze Baichoo, reframed for today. These guys are going to be the revelation of 2019."
Having previously performed at Ronnie's in the Late Late Show, they are back for a live stream.
In today's world of Jazz, we are seeing an homogenous stream of cultures fusing from into world, jazz, soul, funk but with a sophistication through composition. The Scientists attests this new movement, which technically passes its virtuosity to pierce a delicate sensitivity with maturity. An impassioned, heartfelt ensemble, with dynamic extremes. Compelling in its navigation through electronics and the acoustic, with the unique lifting voice of singer, composer Rouhangeze Baichoo melodically soaring over complex harmonic structures to a powerhouse trio, lead by pianist, composer Tomasz Bura never ceasing of groove and feel.
Coming from the Eastern European school of classical piano, Tomasz Bura has a wide language as an instrumentalist and a composer. He wrote his 1st pieces at the age of 5. Solo piano and orchestral compositions evolved into a modern classical/jazz crossover after being introduced to music of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans at the age of 14. After moving to London in 2011 Tomasz created his quartet and started to collaborate with musicians from all the continents, from which his style developed and got him noticed on the international music scene. Called by many the “Scientist” of keyboards, today he connects his classical music background with jazz, world music and electronic sounds.
Rouhangeze is a contemporary multi genre singer- songwriter, composer born and bred on the beautiful, all intoxicating island of Mauritius, her velvet vocal tones echo the emotion and beauty of her homeland. Her voice is compelling with an ease, soul and versatility. A smooth ascension of melody, technicality and heart...her timing in delivery of phrases brings about such a resolute feeling of joy to the listener.
Charged with a passionate heart, every nuance articulates a dynamic story, grabbing your attention in wanting to hear where she takes you next. This is a singer of depth encased with a velvet tone, sensuality and by far, uniquely different from the flock.
She is a creator, a multi faceted artist and Vocal Therapist. Since she has moved to London in 2009, she has collaborated and developed her compositions with some of the world’s best namely Tabla master Aref Durvesh, multi award winning guitarist Antonio Forcione, Bass virtuoso Linley Marthe, drummer Mark Mondesir, multi award winning producer, guitarist Eric Appapoulay; exploring the traditional rhythms of the Sega sung in her mother tongue, Mauritian Creole. It is basked in the colours of Africa and India influenced by her love of Jazz and the marriage between electronic and organic sounds.
