The Mark Cherrie Quartet came about when in 2016, Mark was offered some free studio time and decided to record an album’s worth of material with some of his favourite jazz musicians. Mark’s father Ralph incidentally , way back in 1967, was co-responsible for the creation of the Notting Hill Carnival when he took to the streets of Notting Hill with Russ Henderson & Sterling Betancourt, steel pans around their necks. Flash forward to the present day and the band’s album, Joining The Dots, was released on Trio Records in 2018 to critical acclaim, including 4*s in the Guardian.
With the generous sponsorship of Arts Council England, the quartet undertook a tour of the UK in support of the album in late 2018. Throughout 2018, the album picked up radio plays on JazzFM, Radio 6 and various online radio stations. Aside from Mark’s unique talents as a steel pan player, particularly in a jazz context, the band members are all very well known on the UK jazz scene and beyond.
