Greg Abate Sextet

Emanating from a swinging live session documented on the 2016 album Kindred Spirits: Live at Chan's featuring saxophone master, Phil Woods and the highly regarded Greg Abate, both on alto sax, this show epitomises the best of ‘straight-ahead’ acoustic jazz at its finest.

Greg not only honours the music of Woods but also the same direct musical lineage from bebop pioneer Charlie Parker that influenced his mentor’s generation. With a frontline augmented by fellow top saxophonists Alan Barnes and Jamie O’Donnell expect skilled and heartfelt renditions of jazz classics and a handful of originals.

Greg Abate ventured out as post hard bop soloist following his role within Ray Charles’ Orchestra, forming his group Channel One. Greg was voted in the top five for alto sax in the Downbeat Readers poll and inducted into the RI Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

One of the true masters of the bop vocabulary and alto sax, Phil Woods had his own sound beginning in the mid-'50s and throughout his productive career.
