Lucy Woodward

24th October 2024, 8.30pm

Stories from the Dust is an album full of stories of the women she grew up around or the ones she watched from afar. The music is inspired by Bill Withers and Nina Simone and is rosy and melodic with arrangements to suit Lucy's passionate vocal manner, colour and timbre. The songs range from high-energy explosions to hauntingly intimate meditations. Her first single from the album was a Nina Simone classic, Plain Gold Ring.

Born in London, raised in New York by her musicologist/music teacher/bellydancer mum, she spent summers in The Netherlands with conductor/composer dad. Her early influences helped her learn about the power of melody, which fresh out of school lead her to sing in coffee shops for tips in NYC’s west village, session work before putting her first band together.

Other collaborations of note include Charlie Hunter, Snarky Puppy, Pink Martini (singing in Croatian, Turkish, Spanish, French and Japanese on a few days' notice), WDR Big Band, Danish Radio Big Band, Frankfurt Radio Big Band and Orchestra de la Suisse Romande. Recording/touring credits also include icons such as Rod Stewart, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Chaka Khan, Carole King and Joe Cocker. Lucy has appeared on many movie soundtracks including What a Girl Wants, The Blind Side and Ice Princess, where she is featured singing the Bjork/Betty Hutton Big Band classic “It’s Oh So Quiet”.

Lucy is a deep, soulful vocalist who is as versatile and virtuosic as she is passionate.
