Ronnie Scott's is proud to premiere the UK screening of ‘Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary’, the definitive documentary about the legendary jazz saxophonist, composer and innovator that comes fifty years since his death.
Chasing Trane is about an outside-the-box thinker with extraordinary talent and whose boundary-shattering music continues to impact and influence people around the world. It explores the global power and impact of the music of John Coltrane and reveals the passions, experiences and forces that shaped his life and revolutionary sounds. Set against the social, political and cultural landscape of the times, Chasing Trane brings John Coltrane to life as a fully dimensional being, inviting the audience to engage with Coltrane the man, Coltrane the artist.
The film features a wealth of previously unseen footage including Coltrane family home movies and newly discovered footage of the saxophonist and his band in the studio alongside contributions from Wynton Marsalis, Kamasi Washington, Common, Carlos Santana, Bill Clinton and more, while Denzel Washington lends his voice reading excerpts of Coltrane interviews. And of course, Coltrane recordings from throughout his career make up the stunning soundtrack.
I always liken it to lookin’ at the sun; hearing Coltrane is like the brightest light you can hear” (Kamasi Washington)
“Anything John plays. Anything John writes is… beyond. Unquestionably, beyond” (Sonny Rollins)
Written and directed by critically-acclaimed documentary filmmaker John Scheinfeld (The U.S. vs. John Lennon and Who Is Harry Nilsson…?) the film is produced with the full participation of the Coltrane family and the support of the record labels that collectively own the Coltrane catalogue. Scheinfeld brings his strong story-telling skills to the creation of a rich, textured and compelling narrative that takes the audience to unexpected places. This smart, passionate, thought-provoking and uplifting documentary is for anyone who appreciates the power of music to entertain, inspire and transform.
