ALAN BROADBENT & GEORGIA MANCIO Songbook feat. GEORGIA MANCIO vocals/lyrics, ALAN BROADBENT piano/music, OLI HAYHURST double bass and DAVE OHM drums/percussions
Songbook is the exquisite playing and writing partnership between double Grammy-winning jazz pianist/composer/arranger Alan Broadbent and stellar vocalist/lyricist Georgia Mancio.
Alan is recognised as one of the world’s leading jazz artists with credits as impressively far-ranging as Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, Woody Herman, Toots Thielemans, Barbra Streisand, Lee Konitz, Johnny Mandel, Paul McCartney and iconic collaborations with vocalist Irene Kral and Charlie Haden’s Quartet West.
Georgia has proved herself one of the UK’s most original, adventurous and multi-faceted artists, with work including Bobby McFerrin, Ian Shaw, Sheila Jordan, Gwilym Simcock, Liane Carroll, Darius Brubeck and her own international voice festival - ReVoice! She has played many residencies at the club opening for legends Milton Nascimento, Cedar Walton, Jon Hendricks, Benny Golson among others.
Tonight marks Alan and Georgia’s debut headline show at Ronnie’s and the London launch of their co-written album Songbook. Alan’s evocative melodies, sophisticated harmony and peerless arrangers’ ear find their perfect match in Georgia’s superbly crafted lyrics of both beauty and bite. Through journeys and resting places, childhood and old age; from bebop to brooding ballads and bossa novas: The Alan Broadbent / Georgia Mancio Songbook sets the new standards of the future.
“one of the greatest living jazz pianists, and a composer-orchestrator who has few peers, if any” L.A Times
“[Mancio] has everything covered – technical mastery, expressive range and a remarkable versatility” The Observer ****
"a new songbook, beautifully delivered: that's surely worth waiting 50 years for” The Arts Desk
"These were songs of real beauty and sophistication, that surely deserve to join the Standards repertoire - arranged, played and sung with great passion and skill” London Jazz News
Alan and Georgia began performing together in 2013 first in duo then in quartet with much acclaimed bassist Oli Hayhurst (Pharoah Sanders, Julian Siegel, Ray Gelato) and drummer Dave Ohm (Gregory Porter, Ian Shaw, Anthony Strong). They have completed 4 UK tours with dates including the prestigious Hightide, Scarborough and London Jazz Festivals (Culture Whisper’s Best of Jazz Gigs 2013).
Their songwriting grew organically and within just 9 months they had created an entirely new Songbook. After discovering a mutual appreciation of Great American Songbook writers Harry Warren, George Gershwin and the formidable team of Rodgers and Hart, Alan invited Georgia to write a lyric for ‘The Long Goodbye’ - an evocative piece originally conceived for Charlie Haden’s Quartet West. Alan has previously collaborated with renowned lyricist Dave Frishberg and vocalist Mark Murphy and Georgia’s lyrics have been approved by Pat Metheny, Osvaldo Farres and British composers Kate Williams and Tim Lapthorn.
Songbook is the first time Alan’s music has been heard entirely with words and is Georgia’s first full collection of original writings. Their songs continue the lineage of the great jazz writing partnerships but thematically and musically also look ahead with poise, passion and unmistakable personality.
