ENSEMBLE DENADA is a gathering of some of Norway’s best jazz soloists and ensemble players. The ensemble’s first release on the German label ACT in 2006 featuring compositions by Helge Sunde attracted ecstatic reviews in the international jazz press, and the band received the prestigious German Echo Jazz Award for its second album in 2011. The 14-piece Ensemble Denada have appeared world-wide including an acclaimed performance at the 2012 London Jazz Festival as part of a double-bill as mentored by BBC Radio 3 with Manchester’s leading big band/electronica ensemble Beats & Pieces - the two ensembles actually combining to great effect on one number!
ARILD ANDERSEN has been one of Europe’s leading bass players since the 1970s first coming to prominence as a founder member of the original Jan Garbarek Quartet. So far he has recorded some 20 albums in his own name for the ECM label, featuring guest appearances by performers like Bill Frisell, Ralph Towner, Nana Vasconcelos, Paul Motian, Alphonse Mouzon, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Henry Kaiser and many others. For 10 years his band «Masqualero» was one of the most influential jazz groups on the European jazz scene, and the starting point for Norway’s renowned trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer.
Back in 2011, Arild Andersen and Ensemble Denada performed at the same festival in the States. Both bands were stranded at the airport due to a cancelled flight on the way to the next gig in New York City. That night in East Village, the two bands enjoyed each other’s heavily delayed performances at close quarters in an intimate venue with only a few faithful souls in the audience. Thus, the idea of a future collaboration emerged. Five years later, the idea was launched the 2016 Kongsberg Jazz Festival. Ensemble Denada invited Arild Andersen as a guest composer and soloist, simply to enable a handful of great writers to arrange a collection his new songs and older pieces. On the opening night at Kongsberg, Arild’s solo voice showcased by the brilliant orchestra textures was likened to the ground-breaking Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaborations of 50 years earlier. With regards to improvisational skills, harmonic approach and artistic overview, Norway’s bass celebrity Arild Andersen, now 70 years young, truly belongs among the world’s greatest jazz musicians and composers.
