British born Simon Phillips is by far one of the world's most renowned and respected drummers. His style not only reflects his technical gift but also his distinct musical sensibility; whether it is rock, fusion or jazz, he applies the same precision and intensity with huge emotion and feel. As a child, Phillips played in his father’s dixieland jazz band before taking the London session scene by storm. In 1992 he moved to LA and joined the legendary US supergroup Toto with whom he would perform for 20-odd years. His work with Jeff Beck introduced him to bass god Stanley Clarke through whom he would enter the US fusion scene, later appearing with heavyweights like Al DiMeola, Frank Zappa and Joe Satriani. To date Philips has toured and recorded with many, many other bands and artists, including: Mick Jagger, The Who, Jack Bruce, Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears, Roxy Music, Robert Palmer, The Pretenders, Jon Anderson, Whitesnake and Dave Gilmour and Hiromi to name but a few. In 1997 Philips took his own band on tour, and for the first time he was the bandleader, and it was his music. Expanding his career to composing, Simon recorded his first album ‘Protocol’ in 1988 and has gone on to release a string of highly acclaimed albums, the most recent being 2015’s ‘Protocol III’ .

He went on to play with a wide array of musicians including Big Jim Sullivan, Pete Townshend, Big Country, Toto, Steve Lukather, Jeff Beck, Whitesnake, Jack Bruce, Brian Eno, Mike Oldfield, Jon Anderson, 10cc, Mick Jagger, Joe Satriani, Phil Manzanera, Asia, Stanley Clarke, Jimmy Earl, Nik Kershaw and Gordon Giltrap.
He was the drummer for The Who in their 1989 American reunion tour, and appeared on solo recordings by band members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. He has also worked with Tears For Fears, with heavy metal act Judas Priest on Sin After Sin (1977) and Michael Schenker’s debut album The Michael Schenker Group.
Among other co-producer credits, he also co-produced and mixed two albums by Mike Oldfield.
In 1992, Phillips was asked to fill in for Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro. Guitarist Steve Lukather stated that he would only go on tour if Toto could get Phillips to play the tour, so he was the first and only drummer that the band contacted to replace Porcaro. After the 1992/93 tour Phillips was asked to join Toto as a permanent member.
In 2009, Phillips joined with keyboardist Philippe Saisse and bassist Pino Palladino in forming an instrumental jazz/funk rock trio: Phillips Saisse Palladino or PSP. As well as touring with his own Protocol Simon also currently tours with Hiromi and Toto.
