Peter and the Wolf

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra invites you to enjoy new swinging big-band jazz interpretations of Prokofiev’s popular classical work: Peter & the Wolf.

Conducted by Tommy Smith with actor Tam Dean Burn as guest narrator.

Sergei Prokofiev’s cautionary fable is retold in the language of jazz by one of the nation’s most daring and imaginative big bands. Combining virtuosity and ingenuity with striking theatricality, this is a delightful collision between folk tale and big-band swing with the music woven around the expressive dialogue adapted by former Scots Makar, Liz Lochhead, and delivered with eye-rolling loquaciousness by Tam Dean Burn. Full of fresh ideas, Tommy Smith’s orchestration remains true to the composer’s much-loved musical characterizations and is energized by the creation of new inventive ideas inspired by Prokofiev’s richly ingenuous score. Widely praised for its sly wit and meticulous musicianship, the SNJO’s Peter and the Wolf is a treat at any time of the year.

a double bill that combines virtuosity and ingenuity with unadulterated theatricality … in a delightful collision between folk tale and big-band swing …”   (*****  The Scotsman).

“…at full power…Full of wit… and they swung. Hugely entertaining” (On The Beat).
