A fluid, sumptuous sound" Jazzwise
Shetland born saxophonist and composer Josephine Davies is an improviser at the forefront of the contemporary British jazz scene. She is currently involved in a number of diverse projects such as Pete Hurt’s Jazz Orchestra, the spiritual jazz outfit Collocutor, and Orenda trio with vocalist Brigitte Beraha and pianist Alcyona Mick which combines music, poetry and spoken word. Her own trio Satori released their first album last year on Whirlwind Recordings to critical acclaim and have just recorded a second, to be released this autumn. Tonight, however, is a celebration of one of the finest saxophonists in jazz history - Joe Henderson - and the band will perform some of the music from his fantastic 1985 live album ‘State of the Tenor’.
“What makes the album so striking is Davies' refusal to abandon melody even as she lets go of defined changes. Her irrepressible tunefulness not only leads the improvisers in fruitful directions but also offers the listener an open door into the music” (Downbeat Magazine)
