Celebrating the launch of their latest album, 'Expansions and Visions'.

“If you look at Incognito as being the flagship of my career, consider Citrus Sun as being the indulgent - and for fun only - speedboat that rides alongside her”

That is Bluey (Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick) explaining his love for Citrus Sun, as they release their fourth album Expansions and Visions on Dome Records.  “This band is our getaway, our live-for-the-moment statement”, he says.    And for the second album running, the band did literally get away - to Krabi on southern Thailand’s West coast, where they enjoyed a life of beach and boat trips by day and writing and recording by night.  “This idyllic location provides all the positivity and inspiration needed to fuel our recording”.

The core of Citrus Sun is the Incognito rhythm section - Bluey, keyboard player Matt Cooper, bassist Francis Hylton, drummer Francesco Mendolia, percussionist João Caetano and guitarist Francisco Sales - who are joined by guest musicians and singers.

A gritty reworking of the Ashford-Simpson classic “California Soul” features Noel McKoy, with background vocals from Jamiroquai’s Valerie Etienne and Hazel Fernandes. Says Bluey: “We took a bold step in deciding to cover this, but I had a drum groove in mind and, in the absence of strings, a big guitar riff that I knew would give the song a fresh twist”.

Valerie takes the lead on a blistering version of Lonnie Liston Smith’s “Expansions”, described by Bluey as “a pivotal song in the soundtrack of our lives – a song most of us used to dance to in the London clubs”.

Bluey himself contributes vocals on several of the cuts, including the album closer “Thinking Of You”, a gorgeous soulful bossa duet with American singer Deborah Bond.

On “Back To Wonderland” Matt Cooper gets behind the drum kit and Rega also switches instruments to play piano on a tribute to Stevie Wonder.

In the past five years Citrus Sun have performed worldwide, including at London’s Ronnie Scott’s Club, Under The Bridge and Jazz Cafe, New Morning in Paris, the Blue Note Tokyo and Blue Note Milano as well as the Capital Jazz SuperCruise in the US and the Singapore Jazz Festival.  They have enjoyed US Smooth Jazz chart successes with “Mais Uma Vez” and “Calling Mr Wolf”.

Bassist Yolanda Charles impressed on the scene from the earliest days of her career, playing for Jimmy Sommerville and in the bands Raw Stylus and Urban Species. Beginning to play at 15 with a musical diet of soul, funk and reggae, the journey was set for this amazing bassist who leads this red hot funk fusion band tonight.

Those early live performances led to a stellar session career, working for stars such as Paul Weller, Marcella Detroit, Howard New, Pops Mohammed, Alison Moyet, Desert Eagle Discs, Gabrielle, Robbie Williams, BB King, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Van Morrison, and even recording bass on a Michael Jackson session with Jermaine Jackson. Other highlights include working with Mick Jagger on the soundtrack for the 2004 remake of Caine classic, Alfie, and performing in Japan with one of their biggest stars, Utada Hikaru. Recent session work includes performing live with Natasha Bedingfield and Sinead O’Conner.

But on to this fantastic band, The Deep MO. Yolanda has been writing songs for almost as long as she has played bass, but it wasn’t until around 2002, working on the Robbie Williams tour, that she stopped leaving her originals on demo-tapes and recorded her first song, ‘Fantasy’, an experience she describes as the most rewarding musically that she’d ever had.

This new impetus led to recording sessions with Carleen Anderson, Shaun Escoffery, Vanessa Freeman and Mandy Lecointe performing on vocals, with the finished work, 2003 album The Game, exploring all the creativity Yolanda’s demo archive had evidenced, a writing and recording process that has continued – in her words, “I got the bug!”

From this, The Deep MO was formed, Yolanda taking over lead vocals alongside some of the band from that previous project. They have been rocking audiences on the London and festival scene ever since, releasing their first EP in 2009, recording a single that year too with The Style Council’s Dee C Lee, and supporting Level 42’s 30th Anniversary tour in 2010.
