The DARIUS BRUBECK QUARTET had an eventful 2018, performing in Sicily and Poland for the first time and were also featured in the London Jazz Festival. In November they returned to Poland 60 years after the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet became the first American jazz group to play there in 1958. Darius and his musicians reprised that original multi-city tour and will release a live recording early in 2019.
Building on the popularity and critical success of their 2016 CD, YEARS AGO, this group, having played together for 12 years, consistently earns standing ovations. Concerts always include Darius Brubeck compositions, standards, South African jazz and the ever-popular Dave Brubeck hits. Themed performances have become something of a specialty and recently the DBQ participated in a Leonard Bernstein tribute playing innovative arrangements of his music in his centennial year. Their mutual understanding and interaction is always a pleasure to see and hear and their acoustic sound is melodic, spontaneous, rhythmic and engaging.
In 2015,Tim Dickeson had this to say in JAZZWISE, “Darius showed without doubt that he is a highly accomplished pianist and composer-but Dave O’Higgins must take huge credit for his contribution (as should Ridley & Gibbens) – as the combination of Brubeck and O’Higgins is certainly among the best piano/sax partnerships in the UK.” Clearly audiences feel this is still the case.
