The Ronnie Scott’s Foundation is proud to be supporting lap slide guitarist Tom Doughty who be performing at the club as part of our line-up for our regular Blues Explosion night on Sunday 17 March 2019.  Tom has a permanent spinal injury, caused by a road accident in 1974 when he was 17. However, this hasn’t stopped him pursuing a career in music, and he is now one of the most accomplished lap slide guitarists you are ever likely to see perform.

Tom says:

“When someone has a Spinal Injury, it is a time of massive change and upheaval in life, yet it is also an opportunity to have time to learn and re-learn new ways to be creative.”

Tom is committed to supporting other people with spinal injuries to explore and discover their musicality through learning to guitar, and will be undertaking a UK-wide tour to each of the 12 specialist spinal injury units in order to spend time with patients and introduce them to the lap guitar.

With support from Creative United and the Take it away scheme, several lap guitar instructional videos will also be permanently accessible through the internet as resource material for the patients that he meets. He will also donate a guitar and adaptive equipment to each centre to promote ongoing learning. The Bridgewater Hall are the main funders of the project in partnership and with generous support from Creative UnitedTake It AwayThe Paraorchestra and FriendsShureKorg UK (Takamine Guitars)John Hornby SkewesDiamond Bottlenecks and TSW Engineers Ltd.

About Tom Doughty:

Tom Doughty has been described by some of the biggest names in the industry as one of the world's finest acoustic lap slide players. With four critically acclaimed CDs to his credit, there are no shortages of amazing comments about his new album ‘Can’t Teach An Old Dog’. Once again his ability to seamlessly blend pop, jazz, folk, and his world music influences are highlighted, along with his instantly recognisable lap steel guitar style, vocal lines and the uncanny knack to be able to write and produce catchy songs with instant hook lines.

‘Can’t Teach An Old Dog’ has been described as ‘..a slide player’s masterpiece’ whilst other comments from the media include: ‘...the album I’ve been waiting for for 40 years’.

When asked about his style, craftsmanship and stunning musicianship Doughty replied:

“In 1963, a coracle was found floating in the river Weaver, near Frodsham. An unknown 6 year old boy was inside, sitting on an old wind up gramophone with a worn out 78rpm ‘Bukka White’ record underneath him…He was taken in by the local Blacksmith, Tony and his wife, Claire….they named him Tom and gave him a guitar.”
