Sun Ra was one of the greatest yet least known jazz artists of the last four decades. A hugely influential composer, bandleader, pianist, poet and Afro-Futurist philosopher, he founded his Arkestra to take jazz into unexplored territories – his totally unique style drew on swing, free jazz, Egyptian cosmology, Eastern philosophy, Science-Fiction and much, much more.

The Arkestra could switch from a Gershwin tune, to a Disney cover or raucous free jazz in the blink of an eye and his legendary live shows were part theatre, part ritual and part concert, but always unmissable. Sun Ra died in 1993 but would have turned 100 in 2014. The Arkestra performs today led by 90-year young alto saxophonist and long-time Ra collaborator Marshall Allen.

The mischievous brass blasts and the grooves keep rolling, as the big band – fully dressed, as usual, in space capes with a hint of Ancient Egypt – takes off once again for planet Venus and prove once and for all that Space Is The Place. With Marshall Allen director, alto sax, flute, Tara Middleton vocal, Vincent Chancey flugelhorn, Cecil Brooks trumpet, Knoel Scott vocal, saxes, dance, James Stuart tenor sax, Danny Ray Thompson baritone sax, Dave Davis trombone, Farid Barron piano, Dave Hotep electric guitar, Stanley Morgan congas & percussion, Elson Nascimento percussion & surdo, Tyler Mitchell bass and Wayne Anthony Smith Jr. drums.

Ill considered are a  band  comprising four musicians interacting with each other to create freely improvised music, based loosely around simple pre-written themes or composed on the spot. Deep grooves and plaintive melodies ranging from whispered chants to monstrous climaxes, the group react to the mood of the audience and the sonics of the room to create music that is unique to the moment.

Emre Ramazanoglu -drums
Idris Rahman - saxophone
Will Fry - Percussions
Leon Brichard - bass
