Cedar Anthony Walton, Jr was an American hard bop jazz pianist. He came to prominence as a member of drummer Art Blakey's band before establishing a long career as a bandleader and composer. Several of his compositions have become jazz standards, including "Mosaic", "Bolivia", "Holy Land", "Mode for Joe" and "Fantasy in D". demonstrated a keen sense of arranging in originals such as "Ugetsu" and "Mosaic". Walton had a blend of power and swing, modesty and complexity, hearty tradition and fervent innovation. He joined the drummer Art Blakey’s sextet in 1961 and, together with the trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and the tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, made it, for the next three years, one of the best ensembles in jazz. Freddie came to prominence through his tenure with Blakey, rising to be considered one of the great jazz trumpeters of all time. Hubbard formed his sound out of the Clifford Brown/Lee Morgan tradition, and by the early '70s was immediately distinctive and the pacesetter in jazz also composing some tunes that have become part of the modern jazz canon. Tonight’s high powered group will showcase a selection from the palette of these two giants of music.
