Since her emergence on the British jazz scene in the
mid-90s, pianist Nikki Yeoh has proved to be an
improviser, composer and all-round adventurer,
continually broadening her musical horizons. As part
of the International Piano Trio Festival 2019, Nikki will
premier her brand-new trio Café Oran, who will pay
tribute to the music of French-Algerian composer and
pianist Maurice El Medioni, interpreter of Andalusian,
Rai, Sephardic and Arabic music.

The concert will be focused  on the music  of Maurice El Medioni especially  arranged  for this concert  at Ronnie Scotts Club with additional compositions  by Nikki Yeoh as contrasting works.

Médioni was born in 1928, taught himself the piano at an early age and frequented Oran‘s American bars in the 1940s. His big loves were boogie-woogie and Cuban music, and his style is born of the fusing of these distinct influences with Arabic music. The piano is, of course, a European instrument, but in Médioni‘s the melodies take on a middle eastern character, subtly decorated and turning round on themselves in modal arabesques.”

This year's International Piano Trio Festival is supported by Yamaha UK.

Botswana-born pianist Bokani Dyer has recorded two albums under his own name. Debut album ‘Mirrors’ was released in 2010 and provides a strong indication of the style and artistic trajectory Dyer continues to pursue. ‘Emancipate The Story’ (2011), is a recording made possible by the Standard Bank as part of the jazz Young Artist award. He took first prize in SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition in August 2013.

His trio will play selections from his most recent album 'Neo Native'.

“..a wonderfully enriching album” Jazz Breakfast
