Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra star vocalist Iain Mackenzie teams up with top-flight trombonist and arranger Callum Au to present an exciting new show that pays tribute to classic Broadway favourites, set to a cool and swinging West Coast groove.
Members of the critically acclaimed Callum Au Big Band accompany Iain’s dulcet tones in a selection of songs originally recorded by Mel Tormé in 1960 on the seminal album “Swings Shubert Alley”, with light-hearted and inventive arrangements from Marty Paich and his Dek-tette. The band presents a fresh, jazzy take on songs from ‘The King and I’, ‘Gypsy’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Kiss Me Kate’, ‘Top Hat’, and many more Broadway favourites, performed at Ronnie’s for the first time using the original orchestration, complete with French horn and tuba.
The band also performs some of the most popular jazz instrumental music of the era – from Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Art Pepper; and a couple of originals too. Other songs include:
'Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails'
'Let's Face the Music and Dance'
'Too Close For Comfort'
'Hello, Young Lovers'
It features musicians who have worked with everyone from the Spice Girls to the London Symphony Orchestra, and a stellar array of soloists including this year’s WCOM Young Jazz Musician of the year, James Davison.
‘Iain Mackenzie is a star… awesome technique, ears and delivery’ – Claire Martin OBE
