Tom was born in Springfield, Ohio in 1954, the product of a musical family. His first instrument was piano, but a precocious interest in jazz led him to the trumpet and through the encouragement of Chet Baker, Tom was persuaded to move to New York in 1977 and try his luck in the toughest of all jazz cities. As Well as working Chet Baker, Tom has also played alongside Woody Shaw, Rosemary Clooney, Stan Kenton, George Coleman, Kenny Barron, Mel Lewis, Ray Mantilla, Cedar Walton, Charles Davis, Victor Lewis, Joe Henderson, Vernell Fournier, Teri Thornton, Kenny Drew, Woody Herman, Billy Higgins, Walter Bishop Jr, Lou Donaldson, Clifford Jordan, Dr Lonnie Smith, Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach and Duke Jordan...to name but a few. Tom cites trumpeter Kenny Dorham as his major influence. Tonight’s Spotlight will focus on the music and stylings of this classic jazz great.

In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, it is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting packed houses and the biggest names in jazz and popular music and Ronnie Scott’s welcoming, stylish setting is also home to London’s coolestlate night hang.
