About Karen Shiraishi
Karen Shiraishi is a British-born Japanese pianist and composer from London. She was classically trained on piano from a young age and fell in love with the sound of jazz upon hearing the Oscar Peterson trio at age 14. She spent much of her teenage years at World Heart Beat Music Academy and the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy, where she was mentored by some of the UK’s leading jazz educators, Julian Joseph OBE, Trevor Watkis, Byron Wallen and Tony Kofi.
In 2017, Karen was accepted into the prestigious Berklee College of Music on a substantial scholarship. In 2019, she performed at Bern Jazz Festival as part of Terri Lyne Carrington’s Jazz and Gender Justice Institute; at DC Jazz Festival and Dizzy’s Jazz Club NY as part of Ralph Peterson’s GenNext Big Band; at the Novosibirsk Jazz Festival in Russia; as well as leading many of her own concerts over the years.
After spending the last 3 years studying with NEA Jazz Masters JoAnne Brackeen, among many other jazz greats, she has returned home to London with the ability to communicate musically with lyricism, nuance and poignancy.
She is a gifted composer with a recognisable sound who draws from a wide variety of influences including Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and Wayne Shorter among others. She also has a talent for arranging, and has written for various ensemble sizes ranging from solo piano to a full 16-piece big band. Karen Shiraishi is among the best up-and-coming jazz artists to emerge from London and is most definitely one to watch.
NYJO exists to empower young jazz musicians and inspire music audiences across the UK, through engaging Learning & Participation projects and impactful live performances. Founded in 1965, NYJO has grown from a single jazz orchestra of young musicians, to a multi-faceted organisation that seeks to both improve jazz education nationally, and nurture the talent of young professionals at the start of their careers. NYJO are actively seeking to create a dialogue; between the established and the experimental; the past and the present; with captivating experiences that inspire and entertain.
