To celebrate International Women's Day Ronnie's have once again, teamed up with Women in Jazz to present another leading light on the UK jazz scene to present tonight's live stream: Women in Jazz X Ronnie Scott's present Trish Clowes' MY IRIS

TRISH CLOWES saxophone; ROSS STANLEY piano, organ; CHRIS MONTAGUE guitar; JAMES MADDREN drums; Special guests: LAUREN KINSELLA voice; LOUISE MCMONAGLE cello

My Iris in Guildford (2021)

For this performance, MY IRIS will be joined by vocalist Lauren Kinsella and cellist Louise McMonagle. Kinsella is an utterly unique improvisor and guested with MY IRIS for the first time in November at the 606 Club for the London Jazz Festival – Clowes and Kinsella look forward to more explorations on this special gig. McMonagle is a powerful and infinitely creative cellist and has been a collaborator of Clowes since their music college days, including appearances as ‘The Odd Couple’ (they were scheduled to appear at Punkt Birmingham 2020), and recording for BBC Radio 3 studio sessions and Clowes’s first two albums on Basho Records.

“A high intensity, mercurial workout provides further evidence that Clowes is an improviser to be reckoned with” Downbeat

“Brilliant” Gilles Peterson

“…a beguiling Clowes solo that Lester Young or Ben Webster would have been proud of … Strong compositions brilliantly interpreted” All About Jazz

Trish Clowes is a multi-award-winning saxophonist, composer and band leader. Clowes has released six critically acclaimed albums under her own name, and has been commissioned by BBC Radio 3, London Sinfonietta and Onyx Brass among many others. Clowes is a BASCA British Composer Award winner and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist.

Her performances (either with her band or as a soloist) include the Barbican, Toronto Jazz Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Celtic Connections (with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra), Women in (e)motion Festival (Germany), National Opera House (Ireland), and making broadcasts for BBC 2 Proms Extra, BBC Radio 3 and Radio Bremen. In 2019, Clowes premiered Joe Cutler’s saxophone concerto ‘Hawaii, Hawaii, Hawaii’ with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Also in 2019, Clowes collaborated with film director Rose Hendry to create a music video ‘Abbott & Costello’ – inspired by characters in Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction film ‘Arrival’ – that has recently been screened at the Cannes Lions Festival and shortlisted for The Voice Of A Woman Awards 2019.

“A modernist, Kinsella is pushing vocal improvisation into new areas” All About Jazz

“Cellist Louise McMonagle’s playing was especially vivid, with its powerful combination of precision and intensity.”  Bachtrack
