“You need to go hunt this down. They’re making incredible music!” Tony Minvielle – Jazz FM
Tipped as “ones to watch for 2019” by Jazz re:freshed and for 2021 by BBC Introducing, Vertaal have been a notable presence in capital over the last 18 months. The duo, along with additional musicians fora full band experience, played an exclusive pick of sold out shows at prestigious venues such as RonnieScott’s, Pizza Express Soho and the Jazz Café. They have also supported the likes of Mark Guiliana (David Bowie), & Pete Ray Biggin (Level 42) and finished off 2019 guesting for Richard Spaven at The Cambridge Jazz Festival.
Self-produced, recorded and mixed in their own homes, their new record 'Paradigm Shifting' showcases the various facets of the duo. Coming from different social backgrounds albeit from the same town, drummer Ajit Gill and multi- instrumentalist Theo Howarth met when they were both were working as techs on tour. A shared love of groove, nu-jazz, and broken beat quickly led them to write and record together, resulting in a burst of shared musical ideas traversing spiritual nu-jazz, Dilla-inspired hip-hop and neo-soul. Vertaal was born, the duo developing a passion for the freedom and raw expression of the music.
SEVERIN BRUHIN bass - SAVRI is the musical conclusion of a long personal journey. Severin Bruhin grew up in a village in central Switzerland. He picked up the violoncello at age 5 and the electric bass seven years later. The exposure to classical, jazz, hip-hop, and rock music played a significant role in shaping his musical DNA.
